This week I scheduled my first two interviews. One of my interviews is with the President of Legends Global Planning. Although I am not striving for a mentor in his position, I know that he will be able to open many doors for me with colleagues of his and his connections. His connection to the sports world is what drew me most to an interview with him. My second interview is with the CFO of Careington, which is a dental and health care company. Getting an interview with a CFO was very fulfilling as I finally began to see the results that were coming from all the hard work that I had been doing in ISM. I also went on an official college visit to the University of Texas at Austin this week. The University of Texas at Austin has always been a school I could see myself going to, and this weekend showed me that it would be a good fit for my career path as well. The University of Texas at Austin has the Number Six Finance program in the country and the Number One accounting program in the country. The McCombs school of business seems like it would be the perfect launching pad into the career path that I want to pursue. I also learned about the honors business program the university offers, and I am looking forward to integrate school and the different programs offered into my interview questions to get professional opinion on the best path for me.

My second research assessment for the year gave me more insight to how Chief Financial Officers operate in daily work. It also explained what things you can do as a Chief Financial Officer to be more efficient and overall better at your job. This knowledge was very helpful in developing my interview questions that I know will be able to give me knowledge on what I hope to be my future career, and I know that this knowledge will only come through the informational interviews with people that are in the world of finance every day. It will also help me be more knowledgeable when it comes time for me to discuss their job with the people I will be interviewing. I have not conducted an informational interview yet. Seeing many of my fellow ISM students conducting interviews and being successful was very demoralizing at first because I felt like I was behind. However, it became a positive for me because it pushed me to go out and get what I wanted. I now have two interviews scheduled and I am excited to move forward in this journey. Scheduling my interviews was challenging because of how busy my potential mentors are. Also, it is hard to push them for responses when you know how much work the have to do in their work. This next week I will be conducting my interviews and I couldn’t be more excited.
The thing that inspired my interest in finance the most this week was my first research assessment. Through my research assessment, I found that the skills I need to possess to be a Chief Financial Officer are exactly the things I excel in. I also learned the education path that leads to becoming a Chief Financial Officer. The most interesting thing I learned from the articles that I read was how unique and diverse each day is in the daily life of a Chief Financial Officer and how the duties and responsibilities of Chief Financial Officer change everyday, and that they are even unique throughout different companies. My biggest question that resulted from my research was how someone could work their way up a company’s finance department to eventually become the Chief Financial Officer. My biggest challenge this week was creating my contact list. Although I had plenty of ideas on who could be my mentor, it was very difficult to find personal contact information for such high ranking corporate people. However, this challenge only ensured me that when I do find a mentor in my field, that they will be able to introduce me to an amazing opportunity. Next week I look forward to my second research assessment and growing my knowledge and love for finance.
This week I have created a digital portfolio, written an introductory speech, and grown my interest in the field of finance. Creating my digital portfolio presented me with the greatest challenge this week. With no prior knowledge in creating websites, attempting to develop a professional and efficient portfolio website seemed improbable. However, the challenge that it presented me was my largest area of growth over the entire week. Even though creating a website seems like a small irrelevant task, it showed me that I will be able to enter places and tasks that are foreign to me and conquer them by myself. My introductory speech was very successful. I reaffirmed my public speaking abilities to myself and gave myself a good base for my final speech. I also learned about how important finance is in life through researching for my speech, which confirmed my wish to seek finance as a career. Next week I will do my first Research Assessment which will give me more knowledge on the study of finance. I hope that through this assessment, I am able to grow more passionate about Finance as well as narrow down what specific occupation I would be suited for and enjoy the most.
