This week in ISM I prepared for the UNT field trip. The field trip to the university of north texas is a great opportunity to learn more about the areas of study that I have researched and considered throughout the ISM program. Last year, this was an eye opening experience for me. I took a graduates level accounting class, which showed me that I did not know the first thing about accounting, however, it was so intriguing even though I did not really have any idea what was going on. I also took a consumer behavior class which allowed me to dive deep into marketing and marketing strategies. This did help my study into sports finance a little bit, but the most important thing it did was get me first interested in going down the entrepreneurship career path. This year I am taking classes in Business Management and Marketing so that I can learn new things that I can then implement into my study this year in entrepreneurship. I know that this wednesday is very important and I hope that my experience will allow me to get the most out of it that I can. I am excited for the week to come and the endless possibilities.

This week in ISM I had two informational interviews and I took part in the ISM Business Symposium. My interviews were with Dr. Marty Rinker, the Founder of Careington Medical as well as Chris Prince, the Founder and CEO of Simple Sleep Services. I was able to learn a lot from each of my interviews about businesses and types of businesses and the difference between them. Also, each of their stories gave me aspects that I took from them and will apply in my own story. This Wednesday, I took part in my second ISM business symposium. Having been a part of an ISM Business Symposium in the past, I knew exactly what I wanted from the symposium. I met Melethia Campbell during networking, and her story of running the Xbox campaign for Microsoft and transitioning into the entrepreneurial program one million cups stood out to me as a potential mentor. After making sure I was able to interview with her during the interview portion, I was able to learn so much from my interview with her that I am very interested in asking her to be my mentor this year, which was my goal in going to the business symposium.
This week in ISM I began scheduling informational interviews. I reached out to professionals in Frisco who have started a successful business and I have two scheduled interviews. The first is with Dr. Marty Rinker. Dr. Rinker founded Careington is a health plan organization that Dr. Rinker has grown from a group of six people into an international corporation. My next interview is with Mr. Doug Stayman. Mr. Stayman started In Your Face Apparel and designs and manufactures sports-wear for all kinds of teams and events. I can't wait to hear the professionals’ stories of these two professionals and get the opportunity to draw knowledge from their experiences. Also, I was very lucky that Coach Goff gave me a contact that works for the Dallas Cowboys. She has connections to people that work with the Cowboys and have extensive experience in entrepreneurship. I reached out to her contact and I am anxiously awaiting her return. Any opportunity to interview someone with the Dallas Cowboys is a great honor and I am looking forward to it. Going into the second six weeks of ISM I am very excited to begin my secondary research through informational interviews and I hope to find a mentor very soon.
This week in ISM I got closer to ensuring my plan for my original work. I did my second research assessment on how to start a business with almost no money, which was fitting, because that is exactly what I want to do for my original work. The business I want to create is a private lifeguarding business which will cater to families hosting parties at their homes that need or want an extra set of eyes on the kids swimming. This is a way that I have made quick cash in the past and I am excited to grow my idea into a full functional business. The most important thing that I took from my research was the ways that I can save and use money when I make my private lifeguarding business in order to maximize my profits and success. This assessment made me ready to start on my original work as soon as possible. However, before I can start on my original work, I need a mentor! I completed my interview questions and resume this week, which were the last steps in preparing me for informational interviews. This week I am ready to start scheduling interviews and finding my mentor.
This week in ISM I completed my first research assessment of my second year of ISM. I went into this year knowing a general idea of what I wanted to study based on the fact that I knew what I wanted to do for my original work, and I decided that the best field for me to study this year would be entrepreneurship. However, I wanted to make sure that I was correct in assuming that entrepreneurship would be the right field for me so I did my first research assessment on a career outlook for entrepreneurship. I was excited by the prospect of the entrepreneurship community and I knew that this field would allow me to be able to complete my original work and my journey in ISM to the best of my ability. I also created my contact list for this year. I know that finding a mentor quick is going to be important this year so I know I need to start my informational interviews as soon as possible. My first research assessment and first three weeks of my second year of ISM have given me a perspective of good things to come this year in ISM.
Going into my second year of ISM I am more than excited for what is in store for me. Before this year I had an idea of what I wanted to study but I knew for sure what I wanted to accomplish. Over the past three summers I have worked at the Frisco Athletic Center as a lifeguard. It was my first job and I enjoyed working there, however, I knew that I could accomplish more. I had also worked some private parties, where parents would hire me to lifeguard their pool or a community pool for a party for their kids. I enjoyed this a lot more because I was my own boss, I was able to make decisions on what parties I worked, and choose when to bargain for more pay. Because of my success in private lifeguarding, I decided that this summer I want to leave the Frisco Athletic Center and start my own private lifeguarding business. I enjoyed finance last year so I wanted my topic to have something to do with finance but I decided that the best topic for me this year would be entrepreneurship. As I wrote my introduction speech and updated my digital portfolio, I was reassured that entrepreneurship would be the best topic for me to reach my full potential in and I am excited for the rest of the year.
